Don't Be Caught Sleeping
A while ago during one of my morning devotions, the words ‘don’t be caught sleeping’ kept coming to mind. I immediately prayed that I wouldn’t be caught sleeping, but caught being about my Father’s business. Our minds should remain sober and alert because the enemy is roaming this world.
1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) says, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
Satan’s number one goal is to destroy God’s children. He will lie to you and tell you that he will give you the desires of this world like fame, riches, etc. if you follow him. You start to listen to his lies because they sound pleasing and before you know it, you're justifying your actions all the while begging God to forgive you for falling for the enemy’s lies. Yes, God will forgive you, but why put yourself in that predicament? We get so caught up with what the world has to offer, especially when we start comparing ourselves to them and soon become jealous of their Pinterest lives.
Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Be alert and of sober mind! Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. I’m going to keep repeating these phrases so it’ll soak in. Know the scripture and write them on the tablet of your heart. (Proverbs 3:3) Satan knows the right words to say and wraps the lies up in shiny little packages to distract us, all the while there’s chaos and turmoil waiting to be unwrapped.
It’s time for us to stop playing church and be on guard. There are so many things happening in the world right now and we have to be careful not to take our eyes off of Jesus. Be alert and of sober mind! I picture a soldier in the Army, (my husband is a veteran :) ), standing guard with his weapon in hand. His eyes are constantly moving from left to right as he takes in the surrounding area before him.
What’s he looking for? The enemy.
The soldier has his weapon loaded, his armor on securely, and is ready when the enemy attacks.
How about us? Are we ready to go into battle when the enemy attacks?
Ephesians 6:10-18 says, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
God has given us exactly what to do and what to use when the enemy attacks.
Be alert and of sober mind! He, the enemy, is lurking and waiting to use anything he can to destroy you. And not just you, but your relationships with family and friends. He will even use fellow believers to deceive us. Guard your heart and mind. Don’t fall into the world’s trap and be caught sleeping by the enemy. God has called you to do great things for His kingdom and satan knows that. He knows his time is short so he will throw everything he can to get you off track. He wants your attention on the things of this world and not on what God has called you to do. Be watchful! Be alert and of sober mind!
